The Niagara Catholic District School Board continues to exceed the provincial average for students graduating from secondary school.
The Ministry of Education shares graduation rates annually. The numbers released by the Ministry are as of August 31, 2024. Niagara Catholic's results were shared with trustees at the January 13 Committee of the Whole Meeting.
Niagara Catholic's four-year graduation rate, for students who entered Grade 9 in the 2020- 2021 school year, was 89.6 percent, approximately 4.7 percent higher than the provincial average of 84.9 percent.
The board's five-year graduation rate, for students who entered Grade 9 in 2019-2020, was 92.4 percent, approximately 2.9 percent higher than the provincial average of 89.5 percent.
The results are consistent with Niagara Catholic's graduation rates over the past five years, which were also well above the provincial average.
"I am pleased to see that Niagara Catholic continues to have strong graduation rates for students, whether they graduate in four years or take an extra year to complete the required courses," said Chair of the Board Danny Di Lorenzo. "I am also pleased that Niagara Catholic continues to be a leader in Ontario, proof that our schools offer students relevant programming that keeps them engaged and attending school. Congratulations to our graduates for their hard work and dedication and to our staff for the many ways they encourage students to stay in school."
Director of Education Camillo Cipriano credited secondary school staff for the role they play in ensuring students reach their goal of graduating from high school.
"Every learner's educational journey is different, and every student has different goals for life beyond high school," said Director Cipriano. "Our teachers and administrators make meaningful connections with students every day, building trust and confidence by encouraging them to explore the options available to them, whether it's college or university, and apprenticeship, or the world of work. I am also grateful to our technology education team, which continues to work with businesses and industries to find students co-op placements that allow them to explore future pathways."
