Folllowing a tremendous response to our initial survey, with over 80 names suggested by the Lac La Biche community, Northern Lights Public Schools is pleased to move to the next step.
"It was wonderful to see so much support from the community for our school and our students," said Principal Kim Nashim. "There were so many thoughtful suggestions and it is clear that everyone is excited about the new school and the opportunity it represents for our community."
A committee of staff, Elders, parents and community members carefully reviewed and evaluated each suggestion using the following criteria:
- NLPS Guidelines: NLPS Administrative Procedure 546: Naming New Facilities provides guidelines for naming facilities, including the stipulation that "names of existing schools will be avoided in naming or renaming facilities."
- Student Focused: Is the name appropriate for the grade configuration of the school (Preschool to Grade 3)? Is it easy for students to learn and say? Will it help to create a safe and caring atmosphere for students?
- Culture and Language: Does the name reflect the culture and history of the community? Is the symbolism suggested relevant to the community? Does the name respect the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission?
- Community Representation: Does the name reflect the location of the school? Is there a connection between the name and the community? What story does it tell about the community?
- Reputation and Longevity: Will the name still be relevant and respected 30-40 years from now? Are there any negative connotations? Are there any trademark issues or similarities to existing schools or businesses in the area?
After extensive discussion, the committee created a shortlist of eight names for the public to review and provide feedback on:
- Bright Lights Elementary School
- Lac La Biche Elementary School
- Mosaic Skies Elementary School
- Northern Skies Elementary School
- Petapun Elementary School
- Skylight Elementary School
- Wahkohtowin Elementary School
- Woodland Elementary School
Community members, parents, students and staff can review the names and their meanings in more detail and provide feedback in the Naming Our New School Survey, which will be open from March 5 to March 19th.
The committee will review the results of the survey to help create a recommendation to the NLPS Board of Trustees. Once the Board has reviewed the recommendation and approved a name in principle, there will be another opportunity for the public to provide feedback before the name is finalized.
