The Lakeshore Catholic Gators went from worst to first in only one year.
The Gators captured the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association (SOSSA) junior boys A basketball championship with a 58-43 win over the Governor Simcoe Redcoats to cap off a remarkable turnaround season.
The Gators finished 6-1 in league play before defeating Saint Francis for the Niagara Catholic Athletics zone title which qualified them for SOSSA.
"It was a winless team last season, however, I did know three of our starters I coached in football, so I knew their capabilities in terms of being coachable, and their athletic capabilities. I knew they were very good football players, and that would hopefully translate to basketball, but I wasn't sure what their skill was like," Gators head coach Josh Mosley said. "I knew early on that they were a group capable of doing some really good stuff because of how they competed against our seniors in a scrimmage, how they practised, how they kind of picked up on the structures and the systems that we were trying to do."
