GOVERNMENT OF YUKON
New summer employment program supports high school students interested in the skilled trades

March 16, 2026

The Government of Yukon is launching a new Student Training and Employment Program for trades, STEP into the Trades. This summer employment program will provide high school students with hands-on experience, exposure to in-demand careers and opportunities to build practical skills that contribute to their future success.

This wage subsidy program builds on the Yukon government's mandate commitment to align the education system with the needs of the economy and labour market through skilled trades training. It will be piloted this summer at 12 Yukon-based businesses with 12 secondary school students. For 2026, students will be able to get job experience in one or more of the following trades: construction electrician, carpentry, welding and heavy equipment technician.

Students will earn at least $18.51 per hour from the employer, with $7.20 per hour of that wage subsidized by the Yukon government. The hours worked can count towards an apprenticeship if students become a registered apprentice in an applicable trade. They can also use this work experience to earn credits for high school graduation.

By helping students explore trades early, the program supports long-term workforce development and encourages more young Yukoners to consider rewarding careers in the skilled trades.

Applications for secondary school students for this summer's intake will be available at high schools as of March 30, 2026.

Our government is thrilled to launch the STEP into the Trades program for high school students. This is a great opportunity for young Yukoners to gain valuable experience they can use towards an apprenticeship if that's their future career path. I also applaud local businesses for supporting the next generation of skilled tradespeople and encourage interested high school students to learn more and apply.
