Red Deer Public launches new Volleyball Skills Academy

March 18, 2026

Red Deer Public Schools is expanding its Academies with the launch of a new Volleyball Skills Academy for girls in Grades 6-8 beginning this fall at Central Middle School and Westpark Middle School.

Building on the success of the Division's current Academies, the new Academy offers middle school female students an opportunity to develop their volleyball skills within the regular school day.

Hosted during designated option blocks, the 10 month program will run every second day throughout the academic year. Students will participate in more than 80 structured sessions, including volleyball-specific training, strength and conditioning and classroom-based health and wellness sessions aligned with grade level outcomes.

"Volleyball continues to grow in popularity among middle school students, particularly among female athletes," said Dan Lower, Deputy Superintendent. "This Academy will provide a supportive, high-quality training environment that focuses not only on skill developing, but also on confidence, leadership, teamwork and overall wellness."

The program will align Volleyball Canada's National Excellence Program, offering high level skill development and coordinated training plans. Phased training will take place to support students who participate in both school and club volleyball, helping them peak for tryouts while complementing in-season league play.

With a program cost of $1,050 per student, this will cover transportation, facility, and other training costs.

The addition of the Volleyball Skills Academy reflects Red Deer Public's commitment to engagement, inclusion and student choice.
