The Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation is launching a provincewide advocacy campaign encouraging supporters of public education to contact MLAs following the release of Budget 2026. After two years of beginning to make progress towards restoring per-student funding, Budget 2026 will result in per-student funding being reduced by $33.
"We know teachers, students, parents and community leaders want government to continue investing in public education. Government needs to hear this message as well," says STF President Samantha Becotte.
The initiative invites parents, teachers and community members to let MLAs know they support additional funding for public education and to take part in an email advocacy campaign focused on keeping momentum going to address classroom complexity and student supports.
STF President Samantha Becotte says progress over the past year shows what's possible when government, teachers and communities work together.
However, Becotte says Budget 2026 reverses the progress that has been made and is further compounded by growing student needs. The budget provides an operational increase of 2.57 percent - an amount that does not keep pace with inflation and enrolment growth, resulting in a decrease in per-student funding.
"Instead of continuing to make positive steps forward, this budget is a step back and will have a negative impact on students. Rather than improving access to supports and services students need, school divisions will be forced to make difficult decisions to cover what effectively is a funding cut. Classrooms are more complex than ever, and sustained investment is required to build on the progress already made - not reverse it. Education works and is fundamental to a strong Saskatchewan," Becotte says. "This campaign is about keeping everyone at the table and continuing to move forward together so that students, families and communities see the benefits of properly funded public education."
Through Tell Them Tuesday, supporters can use a template email to contact MLAs, personalize their message to reflect local impacts, or help amplify the campaign message through the social media toolkit. More information and campaign resources are available at www.tellthemtuesday.com.
