The search for a new name for the new elementary school currently under construction near the Bold Centre in Lac La Biche has entered its final stage. After a community-wide survey in March resulted in a "dead heat" between two names, the Northern Lights Public Schools (NLPS) Board of Trustees is going back to the public for one last round of input.
The two remaining contenders are Northern Skies Elementary School and Lac La Biche Elementary School.
"We appreciate all of the input we have received so far and are excited for this final round of feedback," explained Board Chair Karen Packard. "These two names were the clear favourites from the shortlist, but we need help from the community to make our final decision."
The recommendation to hold another round of feedback came from the committee that wasformed to provide guidance during the naming process, after they reviewed the results of the Naming Our New School Survey. Over 500 people, including students from Vera M. Welsh Elementary School participated in the survey. The results were split:

- Northern Skies Elementary School received the highest average rating on a scale of 1 to 5 of all eight names included in the survey
- Lac La Biche Elementary was the top-ranked choice for the highest number of respondents.
The Naming our Elementary School Survey will be open from April 7 to 21 at noon. All community members, parents, staff, and students are encouraged to participate.
This final step marks the end of a journey that began in January when the public suggested a total of 83 different names for the new school. A committee made up of staff, parents, Elders, and community members narrowed that list down to eight based on criteria including student focus, culture, community, and longevity.
