OTTAWA-CARLETON DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Small hands, big hearts: John Young Elementary students rally for Kanata families

May 8, 2026

Recently, the halls of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board's John Young Elementary School echoed with more than just the usual sounds of lessons and laughter. In a great display of community spirit, the school transformed into a hub of compassion, shifting its focus toward supporting local families in need. What began as an initiative of giving back culminated in an impressive collection of 2,500 essential items and over $300 in cash donations for the Kanata Food Cupboard.

Students lead the way with hands-on leadership

Guided by educators Sumona Di Tota and Kirsten Woodward, the true heartbeat of the operation came from students in Grades 4 and 5. These young leaders took full ownership of the drive, turning the campus into a sophisticated logistics centre.

They managed the daily intake of donations, meticulously sorted through inventory to ensure every item met the food bank's requirements, and eventually packed all 2,500 pieces for delivery. Through this student-led approach, the participants moved beyond the classroom, gaining real-world experience in coordination, teamwork, and project logistics.

Strategic giving meets local needs

Efficiency was just as important as generosity. Rather than a random collection of goods, the school implemented a strategic giving plan based on the actual inventory shortages at the Kanata Food Cupboard. By focusing on what was truly missing from local shelves, the community ensured its contributions would have an immediate and practical impact.

"We prioritized essential items, such as baby supplies and healthy school snacks, and used our daily announcements to keep these needs top-of-mind for the students," said Sumona.

A lasting impact on the community

In the end, the John Young Elementary community provided more than just food and financial assistance; they demonstrated a profound commitment to their neighbours. By blending student leadership with a targeted approach to giving, they turned a simple food drive into a masterclass in collective action.

As a result of their efforts, the school demonstrated a practical commitment to supporting its community, providing both food security and financial assistance to those in need.
