UPPER CANADA DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
New Funding will Allow UCDSB to Expand Montague School

May 12, 2026

The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) has received funding from the Ministry of Education to expand Montague Public School.

With $5 million allocated to this project, the school will see 150 pupil places added to the school's permanent capacity of 199.  There are currently 284 students enrolled at Montague PS, with the school utilizing four portables to ensure sufficient learning spaces for all students.

"We're building the schools students need, and we're making sure they get built quickly and on schedule. With stronger oversight and accountability through the Putting Student Achievement First Act, we are ensuring projects are delivered on time and focused on students, so that parents can be confident their children have the tools and opportunities they need to thrive," said Paul Calandra, Minister of Education.

"This government's investment for an addition to Montague Public School is welcome news for our community," said John Jordan, MPP for Lanark Frontenac Kingston. "Through this investment, we're creating opportunities for students to thrive for the next several years. By upgrading classrooms, technology and facilities, students will continue to succeed academically and build essential skills for the future."

The project will move into the design and planning phase. It is expected to go to tender in early 2027, with construction to start summer 2027. The projected opening date for the addition will be September 2029.

"Montague Public School is a wonderful rural school with so much pride and character. We've seen the population grow and change in this community, to the point where the population outgrew the building several years ago. We're thankful to the Ministry of Education for funding this project. This addition is much needed and will serve students and the community for years to come," says UCDSB Chair of the Board Jamie Schoular.

"The Upper Canada District School Board is grateful to the Ministry of Education and appreciative of MPP John Jordan's support and advocacy for local rural schools in securing this important investment in Montague Public School," said Director of Education Ron Ferguson. "As someone who attended Montague Public School as a student, I know firsthand how central it is to the community. This addition will create more opportunities for students to learn, grow, and succeed while having a lasting positive impact on local families."
