LAMBTON KENT DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
JMSS Concert Band Strikes Gold at MusicFest Canada Nationals

May 21, 2026

The John McGregor Secondary School Concert Band has struck gold on the national stage, earning a Gold Standard at MusicFest Canada "The Nationals" a remarkable achievement for a program that, just three years ago, began with students who had never played an instrument. Under the direction of Curtis Clarke, the 26-member ensemble of Grade 9-12 musicians performed in Niagara Falls on May 11, joining more than 8,000 student performers from across the country at the largest band competition in North America.

Clarke, now in his third year at John McGregor Secondary School, rebuilt the music program from the ground up.

"During my first year, every student enrolled in a Music class was taught how to play an instrument," he explained. "Going from not being able to play any instruments to winning gold at the national level in just three years is such an incredible accomplishment for the students at JMSS."

The Concert Band officially formed only last year, debuting at the school's Panther's Palette arts night. With that foundation set, the ensemble flourished this year, touring feeder schools with holiday concerts, reviving the school's Winter Concert for the first time since before the pandemic drawing an audience of more than 250 and earning a Silver Plus rating at MusicFest Windsor, which qualified them for Nationals.

Their national performance required not only three contrasting pieces but also a rigorous one-hour adjudication session, including sight-reading a brand-new piece with no preparation one of the most demanding components of the festival.

Despite the pressure, the JMSS musicians delivered a confident, expressive performance that earned them one of the highest distinctions awarded at the event.

The achievement was celebrated back home with a spirited "Walk of Gold" through the school's halls, where students and staff cheered on the musicians who had represented JMSS on the national stage.

For Clarke, the moment reflects the power of dedication, teamwork, and the transformative impact of Music Education. "The students worked so hard for this," he said. "I'm incredibly proud of them."

The Gold Standard win marks a defining moment for the JMSS Music program one that showcases the talent, resilience, and ambition of its young musicians, and sets the stage for even greater accomplishments ahead.
