The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, in partnership with Special Olympics Ontario, proudly hosted its first Elementary Special Olympics Bocce Tournament on May 13, 2026, at Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School.
Bringing together students from 17 elementary schools across the system, the event was led by the Bishop Tonnos Unified Teams under the direction of Mrs. Battaglia and Mrs. Grilli, with support from Special Olympics Ontario. Throughout the day, students participated in both Unified and traditional bocce competitions, demonstrating enthusiasm, teamwork and sportsmanship while building friendships and confidence through sport.
Students and staff were also joined by representatives from Hamilton Police Service, who attended to cheer on and encourage participants throughout the tournament. Special guests included Mr. Phil Homerski, Trustee; Mr. David Hansen, Director of Education; Mrs. Tracey Ferrie, Superintendent of Education; Mr. Dondre Wright, Unified Champion Schools Program Consultant with Special Olympics Ontario; and Mrs. Shay Standish and Mr. Jason Vigna, co-chairs of the event.
Designed to support transition planning between elementary and secondary school, the tournament gave younger students an opportunity to connect with established secondary programs while experiencing the spirit of inclusion and leadership that Unified sports promote. With Bishop Tonnos students serving as leaders and role models throughout the day, the event reflected the Board's Each Belongs philosophy and ongoing commitment to creating welcoming and inclusive learning environments where every student feels valued, supported and included.
Organizers hope the tournament will continue to grow in the years ahead as a feeder-style event that further strengthens Special Olympics and Unified programming across the system.
