The Public School Boards' Association of Alberta (PSBAA) is honoured to recognize Curtis Walty, Media Relations Manager at Northland School Division, with the Special Contribution to Public Education: Media Award. "I am grateful and honoured to receive this recognition," says Walty. "This award reflects the value of communications in public education, from sharing meaningful stories to supporting engagement, relationships and strategic leadership. I am thankful to everyone who has supported and encouraged me along the way."

Left to Right: Troy Tait, PSBAA Chief Executive Officer; Curtis Walty, Media Relations Manager at Northland School Division; Lorraine Stewart, PSBAA President; and Cal Johnson, Superintendent of Schools and CEO for Northland School Division.

Walty received the award for his significant contributions to public school education through the media. The Award is given to individuals engaged in media and media outlets including but not limited to social media, newspapers, reporters, and other media sources who have made a special contribution to public school education.

Cal Johnson, Superintendent of Schools and CEO for Northland School Division, nominated Walty for his accomplishments with the Division. "Curtis Walty is an exceptional communications professional whose dedication, responsiveness and attention to detail make him highly deserving of this award. He consistently ensures the Division's stories are shared accurately and effectively across multiple platforms, including individual school social media pages and the Division's website. Curtis is proactive in co-ordinating media coverage, organizing interviews with reporters and staying ahead of emerging news."

Walty goes above and beyond in his role. "His commitment extends well beyond regular working hours, as he's always willing to step in during urgent or emergency situations to ensure timely and effective communication. Curtis demonstrates a high level of professionalism and diligence in all aspects of his work and remains actively engaged in the broader communications community as a Regional Liaison and member of the Canadian Association of Communicators in Education."

Walty also builds strong community ties. "Curtis is deeply involved in supporting community engagement initiatives. He is often among the first to assist in organizing major events such as the Northland School Division Moose Cup, Basketball Palooza, and other divisional activities, helping to strengthen connections between schools and the communities they serve."

From tri-annual reports to speaking notes to Board Meeting highlights, Walty is an exceptional communicator at his school division. "Curtis's reliability, initiative and passion for public school education make him a vital part of Northland School Division and truly deserving of this award."

The PSBAA held its annual awards evening at its Spring General Assembly in Calgary on May 30. A total of four awards were presented. To learn more about the Association and the outstanding achievements of its members, visit the PSBAA website.
