High school sports history was made on Wednesday, May 27th, as Wallaceburg District Secondary School (WDSS) and Northern Collegiate Institute & Vocational School (NCIVS) faced off in the first-ever local high school girls field lacrosse game, hosted at WDSS.
This monumental milestone marks a major step forward for secondary school athletics in the region, introducing a fast-paced, dynamic sport to a new generation of female athletes.
The launch of the program was spearheaded by a dedicated group of local champions for the sport: Brian DeWagner, Tyler White & Drew Sydorko. Their collective vision and tireless efforts behind the scenes have paved the way for this historic season.
"Seeing these athletes take the field for the first time is incredibly rewarding," said the organizing members. "This initiative is entirely focused on development, inclusivity, and fostering a love for the game. We want to give everyone a chance to play, regardless of their experience level."
With a strong emphasis on introducing new players to the sport, the newly formed group focuses heavily on skill development, teamwork, and fair play. Looking ahead, organizers have high ambitions to expand, with hopes of inspiring and welcoming more schools from across the school board to join the competition in the coming seasons.
Spectators, parents, and school staff turned out in full force to support the athletes, marking the beginning of what promises to be a lasting tradition for local high school sports.
"Athletics have always been a source of pride in our LKDSB schools, and this first girls field lacrosse game adds an exciting new chapter to that tradition" states LKDSB CEO, Gary Girardi. "We are committed to growing opportunities for student-athletes and ensuring every young person has the chance to participate, compete, and belong."
