DURHAM DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
DDSB Abilities Track and Field Meet Continues to Grow, Inspire and Celebrate Every Athlete

June 18, 2026

The Durham District School Board (DDSB) hosted its annual Abilities Track and Field Meet, bringing together students, families, staff, volunteers, and supporters for one of the most uplifting and inspiring events of the year.

This year's event welcomed an incredible 1,171 student athletes, including 767 elementary students and 404 secondary students, making it one of the largest and most successful Abilities Track and Field Meets to date. The continued growth of the event reflects DDSB's unwavering commitment to creating inclusive opportunities where every student can participate, compete, belong, and thrive.

Athletes proudly showcased their talents across seven exciting events, including three track competitions 25-metre, 50-metre, and 100-metre races, and four arena events, javelin, ball throw, long jump, and beanbag toss. Throughout the day, students demonstrated determination, courage, perseverance, and sportsmanship while being celebrated by enthusiastic crowds of family members, friends, educators, educational assistants, and community supporters.

The event was about much more than competition. It was about creating a space where every athlete felt welcomed, supported, and empowered to participate in a way that worked best for them.

Building on previous years' success, several enhancements were introduced to make this year's meet even more accessible and inclusive. Dedicated quiet rooms provided students with a calm space to rest and recharge when needed, while modified versions of activities and games ensured more students could fully engage and experience success. New visual instruction displays were also incorporated throughout activity areas, helping students better understand expectations and navigate events with confidence and independence.

The Abilities Track and Field Meet continues to embody the spirit of Unified Sports and inclusive education by bringing students of all abilities together in an environment where barriers are removed and possibilities are endless. Every race run, every throw launched, every jump completed, and every finish line crossed represented a personal achievement worth celebrating.

Perhaps the most memorable moments were found in the reactions of those in attendance. Proud families captured milestone moments from the sidelines, friends celebrated one another's successes, and volunteers and staff witnessed firsthand the joy that comes from creating opportunities where every student can shine. The energy throughout the venue was contagious, creating an atmosphere of belonging, encouragement, and celebration that left lasting memories for everyone involved.

As the event continues to grow year after year, so too does its impact. The DDSB Abilities Track and Field Meet serves as a powerful reminder that when schools embrace inclusion and provide meaningful opportunities for participation, students achieve remarkable things.

The DDSB extends its sincere gratitude to the students, families, staff, volunteers, community partners, and supporters whose dedication and enthusiasm helped make this year's event an overwhelming success.

Together, we celebrated athletic achievement, championed inclusion, and demonstrated that every student deserves the opportunity to experience the joy, pride, and excitement of competition.
