MechMania, a student-run robotics competition, brought together secondary school teams from across the Waterloo Region District School Board for a full day of hands-on learning, problem-solving, and friendly competition at the University of Waterloo.

Designed and organized by students, MechMania focuses on removing financial barriers to participation while creating meaningful opportunities for youth to explore robotics and engineering.
Participants were challenged with a series of engineering problems, each requiring teams to design, build, and program robots to complete specific tasks, like tree planting. With each team approaching the challenges differently, the competition showcased a wide range of creative solutions and technical skills.
"Robotics teaches us how to work together," said one student participant. "My favourite part is the friendships and team building that come from working together."
That emphasis on collaboration was evident throughout the day. Students combined their strengths across disciplines, recognizing that no one person can master every aspect of robotics. "You need to work together to solve problems," one student added. "Everyone's robot looks different because each team has its own ideas and approach.
MechMania was created by a group of passionate students from Waterloo Collegiate Institute who were determined to make robotics more accessible. After facing funding challenges when trying to rebuild their own competitive team, they decided to create a new, locally focused competition that would give more students the opportunity to participate.
MechMania continues to grow, with aspirations to expand across the region. Beyond the competition itself, the event serves as a valuable stepping stone for students interested in pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) pathways. It provides not only experiential learning, but opportunities to build skills and portfolios that can support students on their post-secondary pathways.
With a focus on accessibility, innovation, and community, MechMania is helping to empower the next generation of problem solvers, one robot at a time.
