WECDSB students continue to exceed Ontario's EQAO averages

Students from the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board have exceeded provincial averages in seven of eight EQAO categories, according to the 2025-26 results from the annual assessment released by the Ministry of Education.

"Making sure that our students are meeting curriculum expectations is at the core of everything we do," said WECDSB CEO John Ulicny. "For our students to lead meaningful, purposeful lives, we need to empower them with knowledge and skills. EQAO is just one way to objectively measure how we are doing in that regard, but the results also allow us to develop targeted learning strategies to help those schools that need extra support. So we're happy with the results, but in the interest of continually improving, we will use this data for the goal of ensuring that all our students can be successful."

In Grade 3 and Grade 6 reading, writing and math EQAO assessments, WECDSB students exceeded provincial averages by anywhere from 3 to 7 percent.

In Grade 9 math, where WECDSB students have traditionally exceeded provincial averages, 58 percent of students met the Ontario average, compared to a 59 percent success rate provincially. Last year, 57 percent of WECDSB's Grade 9 students met the expectations, so this year's results show signs of improvement.

On the Grade 10 literacy (OSSLT) assessment, 93 percent of first-time eligible WECDSB students met the expectation, outperforming the rest of Ontario by 7 percent.

"We are pleased with the results, however we continue to focus our attention and efforts in the area of mathematics," said Executive Superintendent Melissa Farrand. "It's important to note that while our Grade 9 math results were one per cent below the provincial average, we did improve slightly over last year's results. Also, we are seeing cohort improvements; while 56 percent of students achieved the standard when they took the assessment in Grade 6, that figure improved to 58 percent by the time they got to Grade 9, so we are definitely trending in the right direction. We will continue to focus on supporting students so that they can make gains in this area."
