SUDBURY CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Sudbury Catholic Students Show Growth & Areas of Focus in Latest EQAO Results

October 7, 2026

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board is celebrating encouraging growth in its 2025-26 EQAO results.

Grade 3 students showed exciting improvement across all three areas assessed:

  • Reading increased by 5.4 percentage points.
  • Writing increased by 3.1 percentage points.
  • Mathematics increased by 5.4 percentage points.

In Grade 6, literacy results remained steady, while mathematics increased by 4.2 percentage points. The Grade 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test success rate also remained stable at 83.7 per cent.

"These results reflect the hard work of our students, staff and families and provide us with clear direction," said Morris Hucal, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Education Officer. "We are proud of the progress being made, but we remain equally committed to responding thoughtfully where the data shows that additional work is needed. Our focus is on understanding the results, strengthening classroom practices and ensuring students receive timely and effective support."

The results identified an area for continued focus. Grade 9 mathematics achievement decreased by 9.4 percentage points, with 45.7 per cent of participating students meeting or exceeding the provincial standard.

The Board is reviewing the results across its four secondary schools to better understand student needs and the next steps for improvement. "Through the Sudbury Catholic District School Board's Math Action Plan and continued literacy efforts, we are actively building on our progress and responding directly to the areas that need our attention," added Hucal.

"While EQAO is just one measure of student achievement, it provides valuable insights into where our students excel and where extra support is needed," said Michael Bellmore, Chair of the Board of Trustees. "Our educators and staff work tirelessly every day, and we will continue refining our strategies to ensure every student at Sudbury Catholic succeeds along their educational journey."

Looking ahead to the 2026-2027 school year, the Board continues working with educators, students and families to:

  • Strengthen foundational literacy and mathematics skills;
  • Identify learning needs and respond with timely intervention;
  • Use assessment data to guide classroom instruction;
  • Provide professional learning and resources for educators;
  • Support students with diverse learning strengths and needs;
  • Share strategies and resources with families; and
  • Celebrate student growth in all its forms.

This work supports the Achievement and Future Pathways pillar of the Board's Multi- Year Strategic Plan and its belief that every student matters, every student belongs and every student is called to grow.

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board extends its appreciation to students, families, educators, administrators and support staff for their continued dedication to student achievement. Additional information and detailed EQAO results are available at www.eqao.com.
