Working alongside Red Seal carpenter Cory Hercun, four students measured, cut and built storage for the school's greenhouse. Sponsored by the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP), the project connected hands on carpentry experience with learning about pathways into the trades.
"Having a skilled tradesperson work alongside our students helps them see where these skills could take them," said Lauren Penner, Teacher - Subject Area Chair. "They had the opportunity to ask questions, practise their skills and create something useful. Every time they see it in the greenhouse, they'll be able to say, We built that.'"
The experience also offered young women an opportunity to explore carpentry and consider possibilities for their futures, while leaving their mark on a space that will serve students for years to come.
