As part of our continued commitment to make the Burnaby School District a more inclusive and accessible place to learn and work, the District's new Accessibility Plan outlines priorities and actions to remove and prevent barriers.
The District released its first plan in 2023 in accordance with the Accessible British Columbia Act.
Superintendent Karim Hachlaf introduced the renewed plan to the Burnaby Board of Education at their last public meeting. He highlighted that the updated plan reflects feedback from individuals with lived and living experience of disability.
"This builds on the work of the first plan and, equally critical, builds on consultation with students, staff, families and community partners."
The three-year Accessibility Plan (2026-2029) focuses on three priorities: understanding accessibility together, accessible learning and working environments, and inclusive employment and organizational practices.
Director of Instruction Kelly Chow provided an overview of the updated plan to the Board, grounding it upon what comes next.
"Accessibility is an ongoing journey. This plan does not represent the end of our work, rather it provides a framework that will guide our actions and decision making over the next three years."
Through ongoing feedback, monitoring, and collaboration, the District remains committed to identifying, preventing, and reducing barriers while fostering inclusive and accessible learning and working environments for all.
