In March, Motivate Canada challenged schools across Canada to reduce their carbon footprint. In April, Brittany Schussler, a three-time Olympian and long track speed skater, visited David Thompson School and spoke about the Clean Air Challenge. Students were challenged to increase their active transportation levels and reduce their CO2 emissions. The Grade 9 leadership class then encouraged students, through advertising and announcements, to participate in the challenge. Their efforts paid off, and the school ultimately placed first among the Canadian schools who participated. David Thompson School was able to reduce emissions by 29%.
On June 16, the school hosted a celebratory event to recognize the efforts of students and staff. Brittany returned to the school, along with a two-time Olympian and bobsledder, Chris Spring and a representative from Motivate Canada, to present the award for winning the challenge. Students and staff chose to invite their Olympic guests to join them in a school-wide soccer game to promote the importance of clean air to a healthy lifestyle. Over 100 students participated in the game which turned out to be a huge success. Congratulations to David Thompson School!
