August 20, 2015

I.E. Weldon students swept the top spots at the 2015 Kawartha Lakes Small Business & Entrepreneurship Centre's (KLSBEC) High School Business Plan Competition. Winners were announced during a recognition and celebration event on August 13 at City Hall.

"We have been running the high school business plan competition since 2003 and have had students show off their talent for developing business ideas and expressing them by writing a very comprehensive business plan," said Diane Steven, Manager of KLSBEC. "It is so satisfying to see the enthusiasm coming from the students and the possible beginnings of a young entrepreneur."

Jenna DeMaeyer of I.E. Weldon Secondary School won top honours and $500 for her business plan submission. Her plan to offer a premier, full-service spa called Serenity Spa was recognized as the best overall plan.

The 1st Runner-Up was Faith Gauthier of I.E. Weldon Secondary School, and the 2nd Runner-Up was Regan Winger of I.E. Weldon Secondary School. Honourable Mention Awards were presented to Jesse Hall and Hunter Breathat of I.E. Weldon Secondary School.

Teachers Carla Vivian and Don Wood of I.E. Weldon Secondary were also recognized for having the most entries submitted.

Kawartha Lakes Community Futures Development Corporation (KLCFDC) and Kawartha Lakes This Week were onboard as sponsors for the competition.

The High School Business Plan competition is open to all secondary schools in Kawartha Lakes.

"We encourage students to submit business plans they are working on in class," said Karyn Dowdall, Youth Program Coordinator of KLSBEC. "This competition helps student to continue working on their business plans and helps to foster entrepreneurial thinking and spirit."
