Holy Trinity Catholic School in Sarnia has achieved the highest level in Ophea's Healthy Schools Certification program - gold! Ophea is a not-for-profit organization that champions healthy, active living in schools and communities. Students followed the 6-Step Healthy Schools Process, which guides school communities through planning various healthy activities.
"Under the direction of Ms. Restivo-Karlsson, our students embraced this program and demonstrated a strong commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles in our school community," says Mr. Steve DeGurse, Principal of Holy Trinity Catholic School. "I am proud of their work and of their achievement!"
Ophea's Healthy School Certification Program recognizes and celebrates school communities for promoting and enhancing the health and well-being of students, school staff and the broader community. Just 100 schools have been recognized across the province. Only those schools which demonstrated innovative approaches to engagement and community partnerships were recognized.
A Health Expo was held in the school gym in April. Parents, students, staff and community members were invited to participate. The students' role was to create, lead, foster, develop and promote health and wellness. Out of that expo came ideas, which 10 groups of students focused on and pursued - daily physical activity, intramurals, empowering girls to become more physically active, mental health vs. mental illness, the effects of asbestos in the community, healthy eating, getting fit through the use of technology and an air purifying indoor living wall.
The Ophea gold certification was celebrated at a school assembly on June 28.
