York Catholic District School Board's top graduating student for the 2015-16 school year scored a perfect 100 per cent in all of her Grade 12 classes. The student and her family could not be reached at the time of publication. YCDSB expects to release her name, once permission has been granted later this month.
The Top Scholar was enrolled in St. Robert's International Baccalaureate (IB) program, which meets the Ontario curriculum and offers a rigorous, internationally-recognized curriculum. YCDSB offers the IB program at three schools: St. Robert CHS, Father Michael McGivney CA, and Cardinal Carter CHS.
Following close behind the Top Scholar were Father Michael McGivney CA students, Malavan Ragulojan and Janani Sathiaselan, who both scored an average of 99.83% in their top six Grade 12 courses.
Both Malavan and Janani opted to attend Father Michael McGivney CA specifically for its IB program after graduating from local area public elementary schools. Malavan credited "the challenging IB program and very driven classmates" for his academic success. Similarly, Janani said, "my peers in the IB program were very supportive. It was nice to face the trials and challenges of the intensive program together, because we really understood and supported each other. The administration at McGivney was incredible, and my teachers were very supportive too."
During his four years at Father Michael McGivney, Malavan spent two years as the President of the Science Club and was Secretary of the Game Development (programming) Club. He was also a member of the school's Free the Children, and ESP (Empowered Student Partnership) anti-bullying clubs. Outside of school, he volunteers his time at a robotics camp, and with the Markham Public Library's coding camp. Malavan will begin the Health Sciences program at McMaster University in September, and would like to eventually become a neurosurgeon.
Janani served as the President of McGivney's Eco Club, and as Vice-President of the ESP club. She was also a member of the school's SLAM (Student Leaders at McGivney) and OSAID (Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving) clubs. In her free time, she plays the violin. Janani will begin the Medical Sciences program at Western University in September. In the future, she would like a career where she can use her skills to help others.
The York Catholic District School Board congratulates the Top Scholar from St. Robert CHS, Malavan and Janani on their remarkable achievements, and extends its best wishes to them as they pursue their post-secondary studies.
