PEEL DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Peel board welcomes over 3,000 newcomer students for 2017-18 school year

October 16, 2017

From June to September 2017, the Peel District School Board welcomed and registered 3,164 newcomer students through the board's three We Welcome the World Centres. During this period, the centres received students and families from 130 countries, including over 700 new students from the Middle East.

"Moving to an unknown country and starting a new life can be a stressful experience for students and the whole family," says Louise Clayton, We Welcome the World Centres coordinator. "Our board's Welcome Centres are committed to meeting the needs of our newcomer families by providing information and guidance through our multilingual staff, school settlement response workers and resource teachers - to ensure students receive a welcoming and successful transition."

Since June 1, 2015, the We Welcome the World Centres have registered and assessed over 17,349 new students, including more than 1,500 students from Syria. The orientation process includes a review of the students' literacy and math skills, and previous family and education background.

To register a child for school, parents are required to provide proof of age, immigration status, address in Peel and the child's immunization and education records. For a full list of acceptable registration documents or other information, visit www.peelschools.org/newtopeel/register.

The Peel board's We Welcome the World Centres are funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Centres are open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information or to book an appointment at a centre near you, call 905-366-8791 or visit www.peelschools.org/newtopeel/register.
