The Board of Trustees of Battle River School Division has voted to end its relationship with the Cornerstone Christian Academy Society and close the Cornerstone school at the end of this school year.
The decision was made about 10 months after the school division first discussed the possibility of ending their partnership with the CCA Society last June.
At that time, the Board voted to consider terminating their relationship with the CCA Society, but also expressed their commitment to try and reach an agreement on working relationships and a communication protocol, in order to allow the two organizations to continue their educational partnership.
According to Board Chair Kendall Severson, the decision to end BRSD's involvement with the school was a difficult one for Board members to reach and certainly was not taken lightly.
"Each Board member really thought long and hard before casting their vote," he said. "We had high hopes of finding a solution to our issues. But once the Society launched a court action against our Board, we weren't able to continue discussions and, in the end, Board members decided the two organizations would not be able to move forward together."
Severson acknowledges that the school closure gives CCA families the opportunity to chart a new path for obtaining an education. "Each of them will make their own decisions for the future, based on what they believe is in the best educational interests of their children," he explains. "All of our BRSD schools are ready and able to welcome students who might transfer from Cornerstone."
