CANADIAN TEACHERS' FEDERATION
Local Ottawa teacher with global experience appointed Director of International and Social Justice Programs

May 1, 2018

The President of the Canadian Teachers' Federation (CTF) H. Mark Ramsankar is delighted to welcome Dan Martin as the federation's new Director of International and Social Justice Program.

Martin joined the CTF as a Program Officer in September 2017 bringing with him extensive experience in the Project Overseas program as a former participant, team leader and volunteer thanks to his organization, the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario. He has taught Grades 7 and 8 at several schools within the Ottawa Carleton District School Board between 2002 and 2015 before being a vice-principal from 2015 to 2017.

Martin also volunteered with the Ottawa Carleton Education Network, providing training in effective instructional strategies for visiting teachers and school administrators from Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. Martin obtained his B.A. at the University of Waterloo, his B. Ed at Brock University and his M.Ed. at the University of Ottawa.

"I believe that education is the most powerful agent for sustainable social and economic development, and overall positive societal change," explains Martin who has also taught in Hong Kong, from 1998 to 2001.

Martin replaces Brigitte Bergeron who was recently appointed as the CTF Director of Francophonie Program, replacing Ronald Boudreau who retired at the end of March 2018.

According to CTF President Ramsankar, the recent flurry of retirements at the CTF has opened the door to this latest appointment the third in as many months. "The high calibre of all our new program directors is remarkable," explains Ramsankar. "For years, we knew there was massive retirement wave heading our way which we perceived as an opportunity for innovation and growth.

"We welcome Dan's positive outlook, energy and experience that will greatly contribute to the CTF's overall success in serving the membership and in supporting public education here in Canada and around the world," concludes Ramsankar.
