Trustees, at the April 30th meeting of the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, approved the naming of the new artificial turf sports field at Cathedral High School after Thomas J. Gallagher and John J. McPhee. The recommendation was brought forward by Principal Mark Daly in acknowledgement of their significant contributions to Catholic education, including their long service as volunteer coaches of the Cathedral Gaels football team.

"The Board is pleased to name The Thomas J. Gallagher/John J. McPhee Field' in honour of two outstanding Catholic Christian gentlemen who gave so much to the Cathedral High School Community and to Catholic Education in Hamilton-Wentworth," said Chairperson Patrick J. Daly.
Tom Gallagher and John McPhee contributed extensively, in diverse areas, to Catholic education and more specifically to Cathedral High School, most notably in the development of the school's celebrated football program.
Much of the Cathedral Gaels' success throughout the 1960's, 70's, 80's and 90's can be attributed to the coaching efforts of Thomas Gallagher and John McPhee, suggested Principal Mark Daly. "Their impact on the school and the thousands of players' lives that they touched is enormous."
Gallagher and McPhee, both star football players and accomplished graduates of Cathedral High School, served as volunteer coaches at their alma mater for many decades. Gallagher, who headed up the Catholic Youth Organization for 25 years, also served as a Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic School Board Trustee from 1988 to 2000. McPhee, who went into teaching, served as teacher, vice-principal and a two-time principal at Cathedral High School.
"The naming of the new Cathedral turf field would be most appropriate acknowledgement of their dedication to and impact on Catholic education and Cathedral High school," indicated Daly.
The new artificial turf field will be unveiled in September 2018.
