NUNAVUT
10 years of Nunavut education and language rights

September 20, 2018

September 18th marks the tenth anniversary of the Education Act and the Inuit Language Protection Act. For the last decade, much has happened to increase the use of Inuktut in our schools, at work and in the services provided to the public.

"There is nothing more important than the protection and promotion of our language and culture, while ensuring our children become proficient, global citizens," said Minister of Education and Languages David Joanasie. "It defines who we are as Nunavummiut and as Canadians."

The Government of Nunavut (GN) is built on a strong foundation and commitment to Nunavut's language and culture, and these two pieces of legislation, given assent on September 18, 2008, are at the core of this mission. The GN is looking forward to improving them, and working with all Nunavummiut to meet the needs and priorities of our territory for the next decade and beyond.

This week also marks the beginning of the consultation tour on bilingual education in all 25 communities. Nunavummiut are encouraged to join in community engagement sessions and voice their ideas for the next generation. For schedules and more information, visit ourgoalsforeducation.ca.
