The Vancouver School Board (VSB) has long been a leader in establishing policies and guidelines to advance the creation of learning environments where everyone feels safe and welcome.
These principles are so fundamental to the work of the public education system, that they are embedded in the District's 2021 Strategic Plan. The goals and objectives of that plan are built upon guiding principles which incorporates the principle of "Inclusion: We value and celebrate diversity by supporting the well-being of every individual, creating a sense of belonging."
We value all students and families regardless of race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex or sexual orientation, or gender identity and expression. Our policy on sexual orientation and gender identity clearly states that we are committed to establishing and maintaining a safe, inclusive, equitable and welcoming learning and working environment for all members of schools' communities.
Throughout BC's redesigned curriculum there is a focus on valuing diversity and respecting difference, and of addressing topics of human rights and responses to discrimination. SOGI education is comprised of important topics that are interwoven through several curricular areas, most notably Physical and Health Education, Language Arts and Social Studies. How the topics are introduced to students is dependent on their age and stage of development. These topics may also be discussed as they arise in the daily lives of students. The intention behind this education is to promote a safe, respectful and inclusive environment for all individuals in British Columbia.
Together with all members of our school communities, we will continue to work to provide that environment, free from harassment and discrimination.
