DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD ONTARIO NORTH EAST
Students Visit Detour Gold Lake Mine

April 5, 2019

On December 5th, students from Iroquois Falls Secondary School (IFSS) and Ecole secondaire Cochrane High School (ESCHS) travelled to the Detour Gold Lake Mine site.  The purpose of the trip was to expose students to the operations of the mine and showcase the career opportunities in the industry.

Students learned about the different departments and the varied work that takes place on site.  They had the opportunity to learn about the environmental geological aspects of mining.  They visited different sections of the site, namely the maintenance shop, the camps, the open pit and tailings pond.

Overall, this visit was very educational for students and highlight different career paths for students. "There seemed to be so many people involved in making the mine operate properly," said Eric Farr, student at ESCHS. Brody Chapleau, also a student at ESCHS adds "We got to learn about the large vehicle mechanics and what they do in the repairs shop."

District School Board Ontario North East would like to thank Detour Gold Corporation for the opportunity to learn more about the mining industry and their operations.
