Richmond Student Wins BC Gold Award for Canadian Open Math Challenge

February 5, 2019

Congratulations to Kevin Yan, a Grade 9 Palmer Secondary student, who has won the Gold Award as the top Grade 9 student in BC on the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC) which was written back in November. In addition, Kevin's score on this challenging Math contest earned him a national Silver Award, as his was the second highest mark for Grade 9 students in all of Canada. Overall, Kevin's score placed him in the top 1.1% of ALL competitors, including students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 from all across the country.

Kevin now has a chance to be invited to take part in the Canadian Math Olympiad (CMO) in late March. The CMO is Canada's premier national advanced mathematics competition, and it is the top scoring students from that contest who are invited to join Canada's International Math Olympiad (IMO) team. Canada's IMO team then competes against the top high school teams from countries all around the world at the IMO held each year in July.
