The board is very proud that one of our teachers has been recognized for his innovative approach to the classroom learning experience.
On February 13, 2020, HSCDSB Math Learning Facilitator, Mike Oliveira, was named Educator of the Year at the Sault Ste. Marie Innoviation Center's SSMARt Awards event.
Oliveira was one of four nominees, which also included St. Mary's College teacher Mike Flammia.
Award Criteria
This award acknowledges a teacher or professor, who has made a substantial contribution to the science and/or technology sector through education, volunteering, coaching, or other leadership roles working with children. Contributions may be through use of innovative teaching methods in the classroom (i.e. engaging students with digital and advanced web methods such as podcasts, blogs, social media etc.); leadership in the area of science and/or technology, community involvement, leadership, entrepreneurship and volunteerism.

Oliveria's Approach
"Technology allows me to craft powerful learning experiences that support problem solving, communication and flexible thinking," said Oliveria.
"For the students I believe it brings the subject matter to life and allows them to see how they can use it as a tool to develop and advanced understanding of mathematics."
"I want my students to use technology to inspire them to continue with mathematics or to use what they learn and apply it to something they are passionate about," added Oliveira.
"I thank my nominee. The recognition is flattering and I am certainly going to continue to learn new ways to improve on my craft so that I can hopefully help students develop knowledge and passion for technology and mathematics."
Along with being an exceptional teacher, Oliveira has also found success as head coach of the St. Mary's College hockey team.
