BRANDON SCHOOL DIVISION
Vincent Massey High School Selected to by Manitoba Band Association to receive the Marlene Stephen Memorial Leadership Award

November 6, 2020

Each year, the Manitoba Band Association selects one student in Grade 12 to receive the Marlene Stephen Memorial Leadership Award. The winning candidate must possess strong leadership skills and contribute to the overall culture of the band program of their school and community.

This year, we are thrilled to congratulate Amaya Sydor from Vincent Massey High School for being selected for this prestigious honour!

Amaya has actively participated in the Brandon band programs since she was in Grade 7. Her contribution to the band community has been recognized by all four programs as she continuously volunteers her time working with other students across the division.

Amaya is a very skilled low brass player. Her main instrument is the bass trombone and she is also is an excellent tenor trombone and euphonium player. She has received many awards for her performance skills including the Beta Sigma Phi Trophy from the Brandon Festival of the Arts and has been accepted into many honour bands across the province. Earlier this year, she was one of the youngest students in the country to be accepted into the National Youth Band of Canada.

Locally, Amaya has volunteered her time to perform at numerous care homes, community events and even at a tea party! In addition to subbing in other ensembles in the school division, she has also been a member of the Brandon University Symphonic Band.

Amaya plans to pursue music performance next year in university.

Congratulations on winning this prestigious award, Amaya!!
