Connecting the Seven Grandfather Teachings in the time of COVID-19

December 1, 2020

Jing Jing, a Grade 9 student at Vincent Massey High School, participated in the project on "Seven Grandfathers Teachings in the age of COVID-19" and created artwork based on the seven teachings - Love, Respect, Courage, Honesty, Wisdom, Humility and Truth. The artwork she created is a set of teachings on human conduct towards one another, taking care of one another and taking care of Mother Earth. These teachings apply to all cultures and remind us to physically distance, always wash our hands and to wear a mask during this time of COVID -19.

To recognize her contribution, Amie Martin, BSD Indigenous Education Learning Specialist and teacher, Nicole Semler, presented Jing Jing with a signed poster for her to keep. A copy of the poster will also be displayed in Vincent Massey's front office. Jing Jing's artwork is also on one of the posters that will be distributed to all the schools.

The Teachings of the Seven Grandfathers project has been created by a team that consists of BSD staff and students. The kit comes with fun activities and exercises, posters, children's book, video clips, bookmarks, puppets and a set of rocks, each representing one of the seven teachings and more. This kit will be available to sign out in the New Year.

The Seven Teachings kit has been created as a Public Health and Social Measure COVID -19 tool and will be launched to all of the schools in the early part of the New Year. The material included is a set of posters, video clip, bookmarks and a COVID-19 story book.
