LOUIS RIEL SCHOOL DIVISION
Key Accessibility Upgrades and Renovations to Marion School

February 5, 2021
The Louis Riel School Division (LRSD) is proud to announce the first steps toward the renewal and renovation of Marion School. The project will include the improvement of the building envelope and windows as well as accessibility upgrades such as the addition of an elevator and modifications to the current entrance.

The proposed project is estimated to cost $3.5 million with construction expected to commence in the summer of 2022, subject to provincial budget approvals.

"I'm proud of the small but mighty team of LRSD staff who continue to push projects such as this one forward while simultaneously juggling the challenges that come with navigating a pandemic," said Christian Michalik, superintendent, LRSD. "Strengthening the principles of equity and inclusion through universal design is one of the priorities in our Multi-Year Strategic Plan and this investment in Marion School is one of the steps LRSD is taking to achieve that goal. The school environment is often referred to as a third teacher' in educational literature and I'm so excited for the Marion School community to see its physical environment reimagined with 21st century eyes."

Marion School is a kindergarten to Grade 8 elementary school in the community of St. Boniface. Built in 1950, the school is home to a vibrant community of students and staff including LRSD's Indigenous Learning Team, serving all schools across the division.

"This announcement comes with much anticipation and excitement," said Corey Kapilik, principal, Marion School. "It's so wonderful that the functionality and aesthetics of our school will reflect the inclusive community that comes together within its walls. While the physical space does not define us, these improvements will be a great way for us to celebrate our school and our community."

This project is the first of three multi-year capital projects in LRSD as part of the Manitoba Government's Budget 2020 commitment.

"The ongoing investment in infrastructure is important and necessary to creating learning environments that are safe and inclusive for all students," said Louise Johnston, Chair, LRSD Board of Trustees. "I look forward to following the progress of this exciting project!
