On December 15, 2021 members of WRSD administration met with Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers to discuss a variety of topics including:
- Strategies to help indigenous students succeed in WRSD schools
- Divisional guidance for the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th each year and ways schools can acknowledge this important work.
- Protocol regarding Treaty Six and Métis flag ceremonies for schools
We were honored to seek and receive wisdom on these topics from Elder Dale Bigchild, Elder Alice Berger, Knowledge Keeper Howard Mustus Jr., and Elder Wilson Bearhead. We look forward to further building this relationship for the ongoing purpose of teaching WRSD students and staff the importance of truth and reconciliation.
Elders Circle
Recommendations from the Elders include:
- Continue with in school attendance of staff and students on September 30, National Truth and Reconciliation Day.
- Continue to offer educational activities that develop a deeper understanding on the history of residential schools and the importance of truth and reconciliation on not only September 30 but embedded throughout the school year.
- Include cultural teachings from local Elders and Knowledge Keepers throughout the school year.
- When choosing which First Nations flags to honor, include the blue Métis Flag
