As the saying goes, breakfast is the most important meal of the day - but eating a nutritious meal is what gives kids the energy to learn and play.
To enhance hot breakfast programs throughout the District with a variety of high-quality food options, a breakfast pilot program called Fresh Plate launched this year.
Kick-starting at Xpey' Elementary in September 2021, Fresh Plate provides students with a breakfast menu that includes a variety of nutritious and delicious options, such as fresh fruit smoothies, loaded breakfast wraps and protein-packed pancakes.
"Our intention is to have breakfast that appeals to children and leaves their bellies full and ready for the day ahead," says Fresh Plate co-founders Andrew and Crystal Johns.
Thanks to the Fresh Plate breakfast program, students at Xpey' have more breakfast options. "When students eat a healthy breakfast before starting school, they are more focused, energetic and have a higher intake of vitamins and minerals," says Xpey' school principal Rose Mackenzie.
The Fresh Plate program intends to expand to additional school sites in the coming years and relies on donor generosity. The District is grateful for the program and looks forward to working with Fresh Plate at other schools.
