At the March 23, 2022 Board meeting, Halton District School Board Trustees selected "Rattlesnake Point" as the name for the new Milton elementary school, located at 1385 Kovachik Blvd. in southwest Milton.
Rattlesnake Point is one of the parks within the authority of Conservation Halton and is located on the Niagara Escarpment in Milton. The origin of the name for Rattlesnake Point is possibly a reference to a time when the Massasauga rattlesnake was common in the region or perhaps from the snake-like path cut by glaciers along the edges of this section of the Niagara Escarpment. The Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, is a protected landform that forms the cliff or ridge that can be seen from the school location.
"Trustees of the HDSB recognize the importance of n aming a new school and always endeavour to honour present and future factors," says Margo Shuttleworth, Chair of the Halton District School Board. "The selection of Rattlesnake Point as the name for the new school recognizes the geography and local environment in the Milton community."
Students, families and Milton community members submitted suggestions for the name of the new school earlier this year. A shortlist of names was developed by a committee that included Trustees and a parent whose children will attend the school when it opens. In total 1,028 names were submitted, with approximately 350 unique names received.
The school, which is currently under construction, is scheduled to open in September 2022 and accommodate more than 900 students. The three-story accessible school will feature 21st century teaching layouts, air conditioning with individual classroom controls, double gym, bus lay-by and student drop-off area. It also has five childcare rooms which will accommodate 88 students.
