VANCOUVER SCHOOL BOARD
13,000 plants donated to VSB schools

April 29, 2022

On April 25th, over 100 teachers came by the Vancouver School Board Education Centre to pick up four trays of vegetable, herb and berry plants for their school gardens. The plants are donated by Urban Roots Giving Gardens program, which aims to combat food insecurity and increase food literacy within our communities.

"Thank you, Urban Roots, for helping flourish Vancouver school community gardens," said Vancouver School Board chair, Janet Fraser. "Outdoor learning, especially in our school gardens is an important focus for Vancouver schools as it provides students with the opportunity to learn more about their natural surroundings and encourages students to grow their school gardens and build sustainable solutions."

At the event was Brent Mansfield, a teacher and food education champion at Lord Roberts Elementary who emphasized the importance of teaching food and gardening at schools.

"I like math. I like social studies. These are all important things, but learning how to care for ourselves and feed ourselves well and care for our community through food ... Is there anything more important to us as humans?"
