REGION OF WATERLOO
Piller's Fine Foods and Waterloo Region District School Board recognized for water conservation

April 29, 2022

The Region of Waterloo is proud to recognize two local organizations for water conservation efforts that save 33 million litres of drinking water each year.

Regional Chair Karen Redman presented the Water Efficiency Excellence Award to Piller's Fine Foods and the Waterloo Region District School Board on April 26 for their water-saving projects.

"Our drinking water is an essential resource," said Regional Chair Redman. "Conservation projects like these are good for the environment and help us manage our water supply as the Region grows."

Piller's Fine Foods upgraded a large boiler at its Waterloo facility. The new equipment will save 72.6 m3 (72,600 litres) of water per day. That's equivalent to the water used by 164 households of three people.

The Waterloo Region District School Board upgraded 16 schools with new urinals, toilets and leak repairs. The board also bought and installed 25 FLOWIE devices, which are high-tech water meters that provide 24/7 data to help flag unusual use and leaks.

All these investments are now saving 18 m3 (18,000 litres) per day. That's equivalent to the water used by 41 households of three people.

Both organizations received support from the Region's WET Program, which offers funding to help commercial, industrial and institutional organizations improve water efficiency. The Region gives Water Efficiency Excellence Awards each year to recognize notable projects.

Water conservation is good for the environment and helps ensure there's enough water for our growing community. It keeps the Region's infrastructure costs down. Homes and businesses that use water efficiently also benefit from lower water bills.
