LOUIS RIEL SCHOOL DIVISION
LRSD Announces Retirement of Karen Haluschak, Principal of Windsor Park Collegiate

June 17, 2022

Karen Haluschak, Principal of Windsor Park Collegiate, has provided notice of her retirement effective June 30, 2022. Over her career, Karen has positively impacted students, staff and families.

Karen has worked in the Louis Riel School Division (LRSD) and legacy divisions for 35 years. Her journey in education started in 1987 when she began her teaching career at Gilbert Plains Collegiate in Intermountain School Division. After two years, Karen moved to Windsor Park Collegiate to teach English and history and then moved into the role of Resource teacher. During the next 9 years of her professional life, Karen served at J.H. Bruns Collegiate first teaching English for 6 years and then launching on her path of school administration and leadership in 2006, accepting a vice-principalship at J.H. Bruns Collegiate. She then served in vice-principalships at Dakota Collegiate from 2009 to 2012 and at Frontenac School from 2012 to 2015.
During this time, Karen provided her skills and talents to be innovative and creative to lead projects where student voice would be strong. Whether it was Natural Helpers (a peer support program), Portfolio Exit Interviews for graduating students, or the provincial assessment work with the Standards Tests, Karen always tried to keep students at the heart of it all. Karen also played a key role in the design of programming for student engagement through the FAME project.

The valuable leadership experiences that Karen gained serving as vice-principal in three school communities led her to the role of principal. Karen served as principal at Darwin School from 2015 to 2018 and, most recently, at Windsor Park Collegiate from 2018 to her retirement this June 2022.

Karen is passionate about encouraging student voice in authentic ways to include learners in their academic planning and their extra-curricular work.

"I have always strived to create a family atmosphere in every school and community of which I have been a part," she said. "This is where students find their strong sense of belonging so they can excel and do their best work."

In retirement, Karen looks forward to spending time with family, golfing, and traveling.

Karen, on behalf of the Senior Leadership Team, I would like to thank you for your contributions to LRSD. We wish you the absolute best as you journey into retirement.

Marlene Murray
Assistant Superintendent
