Pitt Meadows Elementary Shotokan karate receives $6,465 donation from Canadian Tire Jumpstart

The Pitt Meadows Elementary Shotokan karate program is getting some new members thanks to a generous grant from the Canadian Tire Jumpstart initiative. 

The $6,465 donation will cover the cost of registration, belt testing, uniforms, fist protectors, mouth guards for a handful of sponsored students, as well as some new equipment for the club.

"We are so grateful for this generous contribution," said Craig Mitchell, the program manager with the Maple Ridge - Pitt Meadows School District. "These funds will help ensure that students who may not have been able to participate will get the chance to learn karate and be a part of a special community." 

Sensei Amy, who runs the class, said demand for karate lessons have grown since she started the class seven years ago. 

"We started with 15 students and now we are up to 80 with a wait list," she said. 

She noted that the class is more than just karate. Students take part in community projects, like cleaning up the school and courtyard, doing demonstrations for seniors at the retirement home, and donating Christmas dinners, among other initiatives. 

"Pitt Meadows Shotokan karate is more than just an after-school program for my two sons," said Jennifer McMillan, a parent at the school. "It is a place where they are encouraged to grow in their skills, to better themselves, and be a positive member of their school and the Pitt Meadows community."

Maple Ridge - Pitt Meadows School District No. 42, in partnership with United Way of the Lower Mainland, has embarked on an exciting new path for our community, focusing on sustainable, educational and fun after-school programs. The after-school programs we offer provide expanded educational, emotional, and physical learning opportunities to help motivate our children.
