A demographic survey set to launch in the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board on Thursday, October 20, 2022 seeks to provide the board with a comprehensive snapshot of its student and staff populations. This snapshot, broken down by status, ethnicity, race, religion, language, gender, and (dis)ability, will be used by the HWCDSB to gain a deeper understanding of factors affecting student and employee faith formation, well-being and success.
The first-of-their-kind surveys flow from the board's continued commitment to create Christ-centred, safe, welcoming and inclusive school environments in which all students feel accepted and supported, says Chairperson Patrick J. Daly.
Entitled "See Me in HWCDSB," the student and staff surveys will roll out simultaneously starting October 20 and will remain open until November 25, 2022.
Findings from the surveys will assist the HWCDSB to:
- better understand and support the diversity of its student and staff populations;
- identify and eliminate barriers to student success, inclusion, and well-being; and,
- establish effective programs and reallocate resources to where they are needed.
"The data will ensure that Christ-centred, equitable and inclusive practices, policies, and initiatives are implemented at all levels of the HWCDSB - from hiring, and mental health and wellness supports, to training programs and education/awareness campaigns that aim to eliminate any and all systemic barriers and discriminatory practices," says Daly.
While the survey is voluntary, participation is encouraged, he adds. "The more students, parents and staff who complete the survey, the more detailed and reliable the information with which to inform change."
