HAMILTON-WENTWORTH CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School's Diversity Committee awarded YMCA Peace Medal

November 30, 2022

"Peace is not just the absence of conflict; peace is the creation of an environment where all can flourish, regardless of race, colour, creed, religion, gender, class, caste, or any other social markers of difference."

Nelson Mandela made that statement at a global convention on peace and non-violence in Delhi, India in January 2004 around the same time that a diversity committee was being formed at Hamilton's St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School. Its mandate: to create a school climate where students of all backgrounds would feel welcome and accepted.

On November 17th, the youth group was one of five local individuals/groups recognized at this year's YMCA Peace Breakfast for their efforts to promote tolerance and social justice in their community.

For more than 20 years, the St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School Diversity Committee has been involved in bringing cultural awareness, working toward eliminating racism and addressing social justice issues. The group was active throughout the pandemic lockdown, recognizing Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week, and celebrating Black History Month, among other initiatives.

"The individuals and groups we've highlighted today showcase what it means to be peacemakers," said Manny Figueiredo, President and CEO of the Hamilton Burlington Brantford YMCA.

The awards were presented in-person at Carmen's Convention Centre.
