On Monday, November 28, 2022, students and staff at Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School welcomed Eric Cartlidge from Jumpstart for a cheque presentation in the school's new and improved fitness facility. The secondary school submitted a grant application to Jumpstart to purchase new fitness equipment and weights for the school's before and after school fitness program. "Our application was successful, and we received a grant of over $14,000 to equip the room with new fitness equipment and started a Pilates club that runs twice a week after school," said Principal Denomme.

The idea to purchase new equipment came from a student who was speaking with Director Barill during consultation sessions on the new Inspire 2026 Strategic Plan. "The Director was asking for ideas on how to improve our school community and I suggested obtaining some new fitness equipment to engage students in working out and staying fit," said George, a Grade 12 Austin student.
"It's motivating to see students voluntarily come to school early to use the improved fitness room and focus on their physical and mental health and well-being," said Pat Costello, Physical Education Curriculum Consultant for the Durham Catholic District School Board.
Ted Temertzoglou, a Healthy Active Living author for the Grade 9 and Grade 10 DCDSB PPL and PAF resource spoke to students on the importance of establishing fitness routines now for your overall wellness that will guide you though your entire life. Ted also took time to work out with the students and offered tips on the correct form to reduce injury or strain.
A special thank you to Austin teachers, Stanley, Matthew and Jessica for supervising the program and leading students in fitness routines outside of school hours.
