Guardian Angels Gryphon Bots win regional FIRST LEGO League qualifier

December 14, 2022

The harder the battle, the sweeter the victory.

After a season riddled with challenge, Guardian Angels' Gryphon Bots placed first out of 14 teams at the 7th Annual FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Hamilton Qualifier at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School on Saturday, December 10.

"With two days left before the competition and having all their code erased from their device, hope of any success grew dim," recounts Coach Justin Couto. "What Cinderella story would this be if it ended here."

In the face of opposition, "the Gryphon Bots banded together and believed that the fight wasn't over until they said it was over. They took the competition by storm."

The team defied all odds, completing the challenge missions in fourth place before heading into the judging and final matches.

This year's FIRST LEGO League challenge, Superpowered, invited students to explore where energy comes from and how it is distributed, stored, and used - and then put their superpowered creativity to work to innovate for a better energy future.

The regional win will see the Gryphon Bots advance to the FLL provincial competition in January.

The competition and the events leading up it "exemplified the true spirit of hope, faith, resiliency and positive mind set even during unexpected challenges," says Principal Peter Messina.

Congratulations to team members Isabel, Kieran, Alanna, Lukas, Hudson, Ben and Liam, and coaches Erin LaCombe, Olivia Ingraudo and Justin Couto.
