REVITALIZING AN EDMONTON LANDMARK
Alberta's government investing in modernizing the University of Alberta's Butterdome

January 22, 2026

Age has taken a toll on the Universiade Pavillion, also known as the Butterdome, one of the University of Alberta's most recognizable buildings. That is why Alberta's government is providing a $27-million grant to the University of Alberta to revitalize and reinforce the building's exterior, ensuring this iconic facility remains safe, welcoming and ready for the future.

"The Butterdome is a long-standing cornerstone of the University of Alberta's campus. Not only will these renovations enhance the Universiade Pavillion's appearance, but they will improve its ability to serve as a vibrant, inclusive and sustainable space for learning, athletics and community engagement."

Myles McDougall, Minister of Advanced Education

Beginning this spring, renovations will replace the aging building exterior and roof to address safety issues from ice and snow, improve lighting and pedestrian safety, as well as enhance energy performance.

"For decades, the Universiade Pavilion has been at the heart of the Edmonton community. This funding ensures the pavilion will remain available for events and activities and enrich the day-to-day lives of all Albertans."

Todd Gilchrist, vice-president, University Services, Operations and Finance

The University of Alberta's new design for the building exterior will incorporate the trademark yellow, infused with shades of green, consistent with the university's official colours of yellow and green. The new design will also take its inspiration from the North Saskatchewan River, which the campus overlooks. The distinctive shape of the river will be incorporated lengthwise across one panel, a symbol of the university as a place of connection, convergence and community. Construction is anticipated to be completed by fall 2027.
