MacEwan University is proud to announce it is hosting students attending the Sarah McLachlan School of Music, giving hundreds of children facing socio-economic barriers the opportunity to experience the transformational power of music.
Under the guidance of a living legend of Canadian music, the Sarah McLachlan School of Music is an outreach project with a mission to strengthen the well-being of children and youth by providing barrier-free access to musical learning, expression and community.
"I am very pleased that MacEwan University is joining us to help bring music and music education to those who might not be given this kind of opportunity," said McLachlan. "Our program is all about student focused learning and exploration. But for that to be a reality, we need a place to call home and MacEwan has stepped up in a big way."
During the late afternoon and evening hours, students have access to Department of Music classrooms, performance spaces and practice rooms at MacEwan. The agreement has been formalized in a Memorandum of Understanding between the two organizations.
"MacEwan University recognizes and values the importance of access to music education for young people, especially those facing barriers," says Dr. Annette Trimbee, MacEwan's president and vice-chancellor. "This agreement will also benefit MacEwan students by giving them the chance to be mentors and to help guide younger musicians as they learn, create and explore."
The Sarah McLachlan School of Music has been phasing in its operations at MacEwan for the last few months. There are approximately 150 youth enrolled right now as classes begin with more students expected.
