TRANSFER AGREEMENT
University of Regina partners with NAIT to offer new pathway opportunities in human kinetics

February 20, 2024

Personal Fitness Trainer students at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) have a new option for advancing their education thanks to a new transfer credit agreement between NAIT and the University of Regina.

Students who successfully complete NAIT's Personal Fitness Trainer program with a minimum GPA of 2.0 can enroll in the third year of the Bachelor of Kinesiology in Human Kinetics program at the University of Regina. This transfer agreement is valid for students who graduated on or after April 30, 2021, should they choose to advance their education.

"We're very excited about this partnership with University of Regina's Human Kinetics program," says Kate Andrews, NAIT Personal Fitness Trainer program chair. "This will provide our graduates an easily accessible pathway to build on the strong base knowledge they obtain at NAIT, allowing them to pursue careers beyond the fitness industry in sectors such as healthcare and advanced athletics."

"We are pleased to recognize that NAIT's fitness trainer program provides knowledge and skills directly transferable to our program and look forward to welcoming their graduates seeking to continue their professional development," said the U of R's Dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology & Health Studies Dr. Harold Riemer. "Our Bachelor of Kinesiology program, and our faculty, are committed to helping students achieve their academic, learning and careers goals with hands-on and flexible learning opportunities."

For over 25 years, NAIT's Personal Fitness program has been providing a comprehensive curriculum that covers the hands-on practice of physical training and safe exercise, and the knowledge of exercise science, nutrition, lifestyle counselling, marketing, and business management. Graduates go on to have rewarding careers in personal fitness training and coaching, with many becoming successful business owners. The new agreement with the University of Regina provides additional options for graduates once they leave NAIT.

The U of R's Human Kinetics major prepares students to work in a wide variety of areas including social and physical rehabilitation, sport, adapted physical activity, education, fitness and high performance training, health promotion, and gerontology among others. The program focuses on individual and community-based programming, and developing a strong understanding of physiology, biomechanics and movement behaviour. Students will also learn about disability and the relationship to physical activity, assessment and rehabilitation.
