Canada's universities welcome significant investments in research, students and mental health made in Budget 2024

April 17, 2024

Universities welcome Budget 2024's substantial increase in the value and number of graduate scholarships and postdoctoral fellowships, its funding for basic research through the Tri-Councils and its new investments in research infrastructure.

"Today's (April 16) budget includes badly needed support for students and leading-edge research," said Gabriel Miller, president of Universities Canada. "Research and development are a cornerstone of Canadian productivity and job growth. Our nation's future economic well-being relies on our people, ideas and communities and universities are proud to play a leading role in all three of these areas."

Other notable budget commitments include the $2 billion earmarked for AI research and innovation to drive technological innovation and address societal challenges.

Funding for student mental health care is also a positive step forward. Young people are facing serious mental health challenges and investing in their well-being will improve their lives and bolster Canada's economic resiliency. Canada's universities are looking forward to working with key stakeholders to ensure that services are available on Canadian university campuses.

"By prioritizing research, scholarships and mental health, today's budget represents progress for students and university research across the country," added Miller.
